Appreciation by IPL franchises for WorldCup heroes
IPL has always remained to be a platform that exhibits great enthusiasm and power play by players around the globe. Thereby the tournament unfolds itself as a good opportunity for young players to endeavor glory alongside international cricketers.
It’s a never ending cycle of soaring and falling brand value for cricketers. As England picked up their maiden World Cup on Sunday, their brand value grew four folds. IPL franchise owners have new names on their wish list to bid for in the next season. According to experts the team owners are also ready to loosen their purse string generously to get the star performers of the finals on board.
Names like Jofra Archer, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, Trent Boult, Lockie Ferguson, James Neesham, Kane Williamson are on top pf the preference list for IPL franchises.
“IPL is all about handling pressure and performing well in crucial overs that change the game, so is the World Cup. Irrespective of who lifted the Cup both team England and team New Zealand have picked up a lot of brownie points for playing extremely well under pressure. So any player who has performed well under intense pressure will see a good bidding season in IPL 2020,” said Pravin Amre, talent scout for the Delhi Daredevils “This is the reason we got Boult in our team because we know he works well even under pressure. He has got the temperament to play in crucial overs like he did in the finals, and for playing in the IPL that is a key requirement. He is a valued player in IPL whose World Cup performance takes him higher up the ladder of brand worth.”
According to experts the bidding tables at IPL look for game changers and the World Cup finals especially the super over served game changers on a platter. “The bidders will definitely retain players who have proved their worth in the finals and are already part of the franchises and also try and get new game changers. It is all about demand and supply in the IPL,” Amre added.
Does the World Cup feat also translate to hiked remuneration for the stars of the finals? Mostly yes. “Players who have had excellent form in the World Cup can easily expect between 20 percent and 30 percent hike in the bidding rates because the franchise owners never shy away from investing in talent that promises results. It’s not just players from the winning or runners up team, players like Rohit Sharma and Shakib Al Hasan have also been in excellent form,” said Indranil Das Blah, Founding Partner of Celebrity management firm Kwan Entertainment.
Some experts also say it is a full circle of brand creation with IPL and World Cup. “Players like Archer and Williamson are products of IPL. Towards the beginning of the World Cup a lot of people would have identified with them through their performance in the IPL. And in next IPL people would still be talking of their performance in the World Cup. While some players have definitely created a lot of interest around them with their performance in the World Cup, IPL is still 10 months away and we have to wait and watch to see how their brand hype translates into success,” said IPL chairman, Rajeev Shukla.
Contributions of IPL
IPL is the best league all across the globe to produce new and exciting talents. Some recently emerged stars are:
1. Navdeep Saini
This pace sensation from Haryana was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore after seeing his heroics with the ball in the domestic circuit. Saini has sheer pace and has the ability to rattle any batting line-up on his day. Saini was first scouted by Gautam Gambhir from Karnal Premier League and helped him to make a mark in the red ball game. Though his inclusion created a tussle between Gambhir and DDCA, he didn’t disappoint in the next season and picked up 34 wickets in 8 matches. Saini has clocked around 150kmph speed and is likely to break the barriers again in coming days.
2. Jofra Archer
Jofra Archer has already made fame in global T20 leagues and has impressed with his all-around ability. He was raised in Barbados but is now gearing up to play cricket for England as he holds a British Passport. Archer was first seen rampaging in the Big Bash League where he ruled the 22 yards with his speed and accuracy. In IPL, he was one of the best death bowlers and has been a true assett for Rajasthan Royals.
Russell Show in IPL 2019:
In all but one innings this season of VIVO IPL 2019, Russell has made runs at a strike rate of 210 or more. A strike rate of 220.46 in the season is the best by some distance while the 39 sixes he has also has no competitor.
The nine sixes he hit during a match is the second most in a game in this season after Kieron Pollard’s 10 maximums against KXIP. Russell is also the proud record holder for the best strike rate in the history of the IPL at 188.26. Also, he averaged 75.40, which is second only to MS Dhoni.
Russell’s incredible hitting in the death overs makes him a dangerous proposition for opposition sides playing Kolkata. His consistency in making runs at strike rates well above the average make him a player like no other and he single-handedly shouldered the burden at Kolkata Knight Riders.
